Lyrics

Startled by Your lowliness,
Puzzled by Your helplessness:
Peasant mother, dingy stable,
Shame and filth and need.
Poorest of the poor You came,
Born in darkness, fear, and pain,
You were Lord Creator,
But we never gave You room.

God, I never knew You, and
I didn't really care‒
Someone so untouchable
And far beyond my prayer.
Then You came to where I was,
And Lord, how can it be‒
All I did was trust You, and
My God was born in me!

See the world as when You came,
Caught in darkness, fear, and pain.
Children born in deepest need
Still die without a name.
Jesus, do You love them now?
Come, O God, and show me how!
Take again this flesh and blood, and
Touch the world through me!
